Louis Bousquet

2024 Presidential Citation for Meritorious Teaching

Louis Bousquet

Professor Louis Bousquet in LLEA understands teaching as “a demanding, evolving art, recruiting every fiber of dedication and intention from one who practices it.” He is aware that he must continually prove to himself and his students the relevance of French and French culture, his chosen field, in an English and Hawaiian-speaking world in the middle of the Pacific, a culturally and historically very rich and challenging place. Bousquet beautifully connects literature, song, and artwork to the time period and historical events in context, inviting students to consider and share their own ideas and perspectives, “His class was absolutely amazing, imbued with a delightful sense of humor and wit while requiring hard work and passion.” A former student, first in her family to attend college and about to graduate from Richardson School of Law, provides this quote to illuminate Bousquet’s teaching: “The dream begins most of the time with a teacher who believes in you, who tugs and pushes and leads you on to the next plateau, sometimes poking you with a sharp stick called truth.” (Dan Rather)
